On our way back to Minnesota we stopped in New Orleans to see some sights. That's what the next 12 photos show.
Statue of Robt. E. Lee in Lee Circle in New Orleans. He faces north, because he won't put his back to the Yankees. The risers are left over from Mardi Gras.
The St. Charles streetcar. Oldest running streetcar line in America. It's noisy and dirty, but fun. It runs from the French Quarter to Audubon Park and Tulane Univ.
Along Jackson Sq. in the heart of the French Quarter.
More French Quarter.
Steam paddle wheeler, Natchez, docked on the levee. Steam is rising from the pipes of the calliope, being played for the crowds.
The Old Treasury Bldg. on Jackson Sq.
Andrew Jackson on horseback in Jackson Sq. with St. Louis Cathedral in the background.
Street band playing jazz with street crowd.
Tarot readers and palm readers (on her cell phone).
Andrew Jackson.
Steve enjoying the music and statue.
New streetcar from French Quarter along the riverfront to World Trade building.
Jean was about to watch of few days of Jeopardy which was on video tape when we saw on TV that the Governor of Alabama, Bob Riley, was here with his wife at the Beach Club getting ready to shoot a commercial for Alabama tourism.
So Jean said we had to go watch, even though it was raining. We found the crew and asked to take a picture. They insisted that we be in it, too. It appears that the Gov. changed his shirt to a "Beach Club" shirt by the time we got there. Jean is also wearing a "Beach Club" shirt.
There was a controlled burn at the National Wildlife Refuge about two miles east of where we are staying on Feb. 18. This photo from the beach shows our condos in the distance, and beyond that, the fire.
Hurricane Ivan caused much damage in the Gulf Shores/Pensacola area. Here a crane is preparing to repair the roof damage which occurred on two of the four towers. The tower we are in does not need roof repair.
A development of singe family units is going up on the same property as the condos we are staying in.
The main pool is not warm enough for swimming yet. Last year they heated the pool, but the cost for doing it was very high, so this year it's just for watching, so far.
The hurricane swept out some of the dunes from last year.
Jean on the beach with the condos in the background.
Steve on the beach.
Some of the hurricane rubble still left on the beach.
More beach rubble.
This is a "structure" probably built by some kids out of beach rubble. Notice the chair. We walk by this on our beach walks every day or two. We call it the Robinson Crusoe shelter.
These dunes were leveled by Ivan, but some of the grasses are starting to come back.
Ocean waves.
More ocean.
Shore bird, etc.
Steve, eating peanuts on our balcony at sunset.
Sunset. The peanuts are gone by this time.
The boardwalks from the condos to the beach have been rebuilt.
We drove to a Toyota dealer in Pensacola for some car repairs and stopped in Seville Square Historic District in Pensacola. Here is a photo of Jean in the area.
Large house on Seville Square HD.
Many houses are still covered with blue tarps until the roofers, who are in short supply, can repair the roofs.
There seem to be a lot of Pensacola Pelicans which have been painted by local artists. This reminds us of similar statues in the Twin Cities area of Peanuts comic strip characters.
I combined ten of them into a collage. We are obviously not on a tight schedule.
An Episcopal Church on Seville Square with a pelican peeking.
A Live Oak on Seville Square with Steve doing chin ups.
Seville Square HD restaurants in reclaimed buildings.
